Alan Bush - Research Event at the Royal Academy of Music

In 1925, British composer Alan Bush (1900-95) was appointed as a professor at the Academy, a position he went on to hold for 52 years. Author Joanna Bullivant and composers Timothy Bowers and Edward Gregson explore Bush’s contribution to British music. The discussion will be chaired by Jonathan Clinch and will feature performances by PhD students Xiaowen Shang (piano) and Isaac Shieh (horn).

Explore the lives and music of three extraordinary Jewish pianists: Harriet Cohen, Myra Hess and Irene Scharrer.

Delve into their navigation of the classical music industry, World Wars, and Jewish identity in the twentieth century. Listen to live performances of significant works from their careers by Academy students, see materials from the British Library’s Music Collections, and hear discussions, from a panel of passionate academics, of their political-musical challenges and achievements.

The programme features Cohen’s only published work, Scharrer’s meticulous Chopin and an iconic Hess Beethoven performance.

Following her scintillating concerto performance in the Mozart birthday concert in January, Xiaowen Shang returns to give a recital which reflects her interest in 18th century keyboard music.

Her programme includes a mighty early Sonata by Beethoven, some charming pieces by the leading French Baroque composer Couperin, and Ravel’s virtuoso tribute to great predecessor.

Quarter-Life Crisis

As part of the Seigla Festival in Reykjavik, Iceland, Temporal Harmonies Inc. (THI) curates a rare-heard concert: in the first half of the concert, THI performs a programme that focus on solo and chamber music written in the last three decades. In the second half, THI invites audience to draw graphic scores and improvises based on their drawing.

This year’s focus is Robert Schumann, and all the events are free admission. Pianist and harpsichordist Xiaowen Shang, a 2024 BBC Music Magazine Rising Star, is known for her versatility and stylish approach to music of many eras. Tonight she plays French keyboard works spanning two centuries: Messiaen’s birdsong piece La Fauvette Passerinette, only recently uncovered in the composer’s archive; Couperin’s poetic 14th Suite; and Ravel’s impressionist Le Tombeau de Couperin.
